オオカミバンド、4年振りに欧米に上陸。
会場はニューヨーク・マンハッタンのIrving Plaza。とにかく国際色豊かなオーディエンスに驚く。曲中に歌詞を口ずさみメロイックサインを掲げるロックファンもいれば、この春から主題歌を担当しているアニメ「鬼滅の刃」のTシャツを着たファンなどもいて、さまざまなルーツからこのバンドを知りこの場に集っているのだと感じた。このダイバーシティは、国籍を問わない“究極の生命体”MAN WITH A MISSION（以下マンウィズ）が引き寄せた純粋な音楽ファン。開演前にはライブ中の撮影禁止のアナウンスが流れた。オーディエンスがケータイを向ける光景が主流なアメリカでのライブで写真撮影ができないことは珍しく、音楽としっかり向き合える良い環境ともいえる。
“We are MAN WITH A MISSION! ヨロシクオネガイイタシマス！”日本語と英語を話すジャン・ケン・ジョニーのトークにオオカミの遠吠えで返すファンがいたりとオーディエンスとの会話がはずむ。「Merry-Go-Round」では日本語の歌詞まで完璧に歌う現地のファンもいた。壮大なサウンドと重低音でロックファンを魅了する「Emotions」ではシンガロングが起こる。
過去にアメリカのギグでSlipknotのDJ Sid WilsonともジョイントしたことがあるDJサンタモニカのDJパフォーマンスや、笑いを交えたショートビデオ（英語字幕付き）の放映を終えると「evergreen」をアコースティックバージョンで。その後に披露したNirvana「Smells Like Teen Spirit」のカバーはラップやDJのスクラッチなどマンウィズ流のスパイスが効いた、このバンドがJ-Rockシーンに旋風を巻き起こすきっかけにもなった曲だ。ジャン・ケン・ジョニーは、Nirvanaのほかに影響を受けたバンドとしてRage Against the MachineやThe Smashing Pumpkinsなどの90年代アメリカンロックを挙げている。
“ニューヨークはデカくてクレイジーな街だけど、日本もそうだ”と、東京をレペゼンする「Dead End in Tokyo」へと繋げ、アンコールでは三味線の音色が和の心を疼く「絆ノ奇跡」を。マンウィズの代表曲とも言える「FLY AGAIN」ではダイブするファンも現れた。ワールドツアー『WOLVES ON PARADE』も後半戦。5匹のオオカミたちのパレードはヨーロッパで行進中。
