アメリカ現地の人と日本のロックバンドの話になるとまず名前が挙がるのがONE OK ROCKだ。
ボーカルのTakaはロサンゼルスを拠点にし、その歌唱力はもちろんのこと、レコーディング等の制作現場がアメリカベースであることや、それゆえ現地のミュージシャンたちと広い交友関係にあり数々のコラボレーションを実現していることも、アメリカで認められている理由だろう。
ONE OK ROCKがアメリカでツアーを実施するのは3年振りで、前回に増して各地でソールドアウトが続出している。
すっかり秋めいたニューヨークはマンハッタン。その中心地に位置する会場Hammerstein Ballroomには彼らの再訪を祝う多くのファンが集った。
“ONE OK ROCK is back!!” オープニングSEでメンバーが登場。
右手にメロイックサインを掲げてTaka（Vo.）がスタンドマイクの前に立ち「Save Yourself」でスタートを切った。続く「Taking Off」では唸る重低音とキレのあるパフォーマンスを見せつけ、“やっとここに戻ってこられたよ、ニューヨーク！アメリカでツアーやるのは久しぶりだね。良い夜にしよう。準備はいい？！” と、ファンとの再会を噛み締めるTaka。
「Renegades」を歌い上げる堂々たる佇まいは圧巻で、シンガロングで場内の一体感が増す。
トークパートは全メンバーが英語でおこなった。
“声聞かせて！”とさらに煽るTakaは「Neon」へと繋ぎ、「So Far Gone」ではオーディエンスが照らす携帯電話のライトが場内を温かく包み込む。
「The Beginning」のイントロが始まるや否や、待ってました！と言わんばかりの歓声が沸いた。Takaはステージを降りてフロアの前方へのめり込んで歌い続ける。“最高の夜をありがとう。そして、ここに来てくれてありがとう。必ずまた戻ってくるから！”ラストは「Wasted Nights」で壮大なステージを見せた。
その後、“One more song!（もう一曲！）”と鳴り止まないアンコールに応えて「Always coming back」のアコースティックバージョンと「American Girls」を披露し、ポジティブバイブでショーを締めくくった。
Green Day、My Chemical Romanceなどのアメリカを代表するロックバンドの楽曲を手掛けるRob Cavalloをプロデューサーに迎え、5 Seconds of SummerやBring Me The Horizonのメンバーと共同制作したトラックも含まれている彼らのニューアルバム『Luxury Disease』は超絶にロックな仕上がりとなった。
15年前に放たれた1stアルバムのタイトル『ゼイタクビョウ』と同じ意味を持つ本作のリリースツアーを海外でスタートさせるという事実が、彼らの順調な世界進出を証明しているようだ。

Who: ONE OK ROCK
A Japanese rock band formed in 2005 and debuted in 2007. Since then, the band has grown at a fast pace with immense support by the younger generation for its emo and rock-based sounds along with aggressive live performances.
They have rapidly become one of the most popular Japanese rock bands due to hugely successful concerts such as Nippon Budokan Live in 2010, Yokohama Stadium Live in 2014, and arena tours in 2013 & 2015. In 2016, they held an outdoor live concert that drew an astounding 110,000 people and in 2018, they held a nationwide dome tour including two days at Tokyo Dome.
In April 2015, the band signed a worldwide distribution deal with Warner Bros and have since held tours in the US, Europe, South America and Australia.
The band released the album『Eye of the Storm』in 2019 and were chosen as the opening act for Ed Sheeran’s Divide Asia Tour. In October 2020, the band successfully conducted their first attempt at an online live concert that was broadcast live simultaneously around the world without an audience.
This year the band released two new singles『Renegades』and 『Broken Heart of Gold』and in July 2021, they completed their first acoustic live performance, sharing a more intimate side of their music. ONE OK ROCK will continue towards their goal to be Japan’s first globally recognized band and in turn have a strong impact on today’s younger generation and the Alternative music scene as a whole.
